Talpur House is another old and largest building on the premises of the institution, which was constructed in 1901, just after 16 years of establishment of Sindh Madrassah, it is three stories building each floor housing with the separate academic and administrative departments.
Due to the extreme rainfall event in Karachi on 27th August 2020, the entire campus of SMIU especially two heritage buildings namely Main Building (Constructed in 1885) and Talpur House (Constructed in 1901) were submerged in floodwater up to 5 feet.
The building is of the colonial era. Its finishes floor level (FFLs) is lower than the current road level of I.I. Chundrigarh Road, the floodwater from this road flowed directly into the campus premises through Gate No. 3 and accumulated there. Besides the sewerage lines of KWSB choked due to flood water and the flow of sewerage reverse flowed into the SMIU campus through our manholes due to low FFL of campus near Talpur House. Accumulated floodwater from Aiwan-i- Tijarat road flowed into the SMIU ground through the Main Gate of SM Science College and completed flooded the ground. When the level of accumulated water in ground increased further, it spilled in campus around Talpur House.
The storm water was drained out using pumps, however, the campus area specially Talpur House was flooded for 2-3 days due to which SMIU incurred the following losses:
- All offices of Talpur House Building along with the entire furniture were damaged.
- Cement concrete flooring at Gate No.3 and Interlock Paver flooring in the campus were badly damaged.
- Roofs of main building, Talpur House and Masjid were damaged and started to leak water.
- Reverse flowing sewerage line damaged manholes and the entire sewerage line of SMIU.
- Ceiling fans, light bulbs, DB’s, wiring etc. of various departments were deteriorated due to seepage of water.
- The water dispensers was rendered faulty due to storm water.
On the demand of the Vice Chancellor of Sindh Madrassah, the restoration work was started in June 2022 and is to be completed in December 2023.
