Introduction

The Endowment Fund Trust (EFT) established its Research Cell (RC) in 2022 with the aim of advancing knowledge and fostering intellectual growth through systematic investigation and research in social, anthropological, and archaeological areas. The RC is dedicated to enhancing understanding in these fields and supporting the preservation of cultural heritage. In addition to its core research activities, the RC focuses on compiling Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s work, organizing seminars on Bhittai, and engaging in heritage preservation initiatives. The RC operates under the supervision of Secretary Hamid Akhund, EFT, with Dr. Sahar Gul Bhatti serving as the consultant, providing invaluable guidance and expertise. Currently, Erum Chang is serving as a Research Officer in the Research Cell (RC). This month, the RC has welcomed a new Research Officer, Suneel Kumar, who has been appointed and is presently engaged in work in Nagarparker.

  1. The Ceremonial Rituals at the Shrine of Manghopir
    This study investigates the ceremonial practices at the Manghopir Shrine, analyzing their cultural and religious significance.
  2. Food Heritage of the Dawoodi Bohra Community: A Vibrant Culinary Tradition and Its Cultural Legacy
    This research explores the rich culinary traditions of the Dawoodi Bohra community, highlighting the cultural legacy and significance of their food heritage.

Currently, three research papers are in progress as part of the Research Cell’s ongoing projects.

  1. The Chaukhandi Necropolis: A Deep Glance Over Its Genesis, Architectural Uniqueness, and Cultural Elements Through Theories and Myths: This paper examines the origins, architectural distinctiveness, and cultural aspects of the Chaukhandi Necropolis, exploring various theories and myths associated with it. The paper is completed, currently being revised based on the review comments and suggestions provided by Badar Sb.
  2. Cultural Heritage & Community Identity: The Ethno-Archeological Study of Punch Mukhi Hanuman Mandir & Its Significance to Hindu Communities in Sindh: This paper focuses on the Punch Mukhi Hanuman Mandir and its importance to Hindu communities in Sindh.

Research Cell Internship Program (2023)

In 2023, The Research Cell, Endowment Fund Trust (EFT) implemented an internship program for fresh graduates. The program engaged four interns who worked on assignments aligned with EFT’s objectives, resulting in nine well-structured articles and papers. This initiative not only produced valuable heritage data but also provided significant practical experience, contributing to the interns’ professional development.

Comprehensive Overview of Research Cell Projects and Contributions

  1. Detailed Chronological Armory History of Sindh
    The Research Cell has completed and submitted the “Detailed Chronological Armory History of Sindh,” offering a comprehensive account of the region’s historical evolution.
  2. Chachnama and Sindhi Minorities Documentation
    The Research Cell has compiled a detailed document on Chachnama and the status of Sindhi minorities. The document serves as an authoritative reference, consolidating valuable information from reputable publications.
  3. Women Artisans and Agricultural Entrepreneurs’ Craft Mela on International Women’s Day 2022:
    The Research Cell team documented the entire event and conducted interviews with each stallholder. Each team member interviewed five stall products and submitted their reports to the department.
  4. Exploring the Enduring Relevance of Sufi Tales: A Program on Shabnam Virmani’s Book and Film
    The 279th Urs of Shah Latif was commemorated with a program featuring the screening of “The Legend of Marui,” a film directed by Shabnam Virmani. The film retells a Sufi tale about a young girl held captive by a powerful king, exploring themes of freedom, imprisonment, longing, and belonging, and weaving together the spiritual and social, personal and political, historical and timeless aspects of the story. The screening highlighted the enduring relevance of Sufi tales and their importance in contemporary society.
    The program delved into the timeless and spiritual aspects of Sufi tales, as well as their contemporary relevance. Esteemed speakers Dr. Sahar Gul, Jami Chandio, and Prof. Pervaiz Solangi led the book discussion and provided insightful analysis and interpretation of Shabnam Virmani’s book and film, “I Saw Myself: Journey with Shah Abdul Bhitai.” The event provided an opportunity to engage in thought-provoking conversations about the power and influence of Sufi literature in today’s society.
  5. Cataloguing of Artifacts at the CDC
    Ms. Erum Chang, a member of the Research Cell team, was tasked with cataloging artifacts found during excavations at multiple sites in Sindh. She traveled to the Center for Documentation and Conservation of the Heritage of Sindh in Jamshoro and successfully cataloged the following sites within five days. The cataloging process involved the identification, description, and recording of each artifact, as well as the creation of a digital database to store the information for future research and preservation efforts.

  6. Presentation at the International Event: The Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) (2023)
    The Research Cell was honored to receive a formal invitation from Michel Boivin, Director of Research at CNRS, inviting Research Officer (RO) Erum Chang to participate as a representative of the Endowment Fund Trust for Preservation of Sindh Heritage in a seminar at the prestigious Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), held on January 4, 2023. With expertise in heritage preservation, the RO presented her thesis titled “Marri Tombs: The Exploration, Documentation, and Reconstruction of the off-Track Renowned Heritage of Sindh.” The presentation was well-received and showcased the Research Cell’s commitment to preserving and promoting Sindh’s rich cultural heritage.
  7. Book review by the Research Cell Team
    During the induction phase, the RC team was given the responsibility to evaluate specific books, intended to serve as the foundation of annual seminars designed to attract a broader audience for the exchange of ideas. Each RC member was tasked with formulating themes based on the chosen books, selecting speakers, and suggesting concepts for a theatrical presentation that would convey the book message to the audience. The team exhibited great care and dedication in accomplishing the assignment, realizing the significance of such events in promoting intellectual dialogue and cultivating a lifelong learning environment.
  8. The Documentation of Basant Hall: Guidelines and Use of Space
    The Research Cell team undertook the development of Basant Hall Guidelines, Code of Conduct, and Membership forms to facilitate participation and enrollment in activities hosted at the Basant Hall. As a cultural, artistic, and social hub for the community, the Basant Hall plays a vital role in promoting intercultural exchange, literacy conversations, and cultural events to foster cultural harmony and awareness of Sindh’s rich heritage. The BH will be limited to cultural and social activities for its members to maintain the integrity of the space. The guidelines and code of conduct developed by the team will serve as a framework for ensuring the smooth functioning of the Basant Hall while upholding the values and principles it represents.
  9. An overview of Kalhora Architecture Book by “S. Hakim Bukhari”
    RO Erum Chang was given the task of conducting a thorough review of the book. An Overview of Kalhora Architecture authored by S. Hakim Ali Shah Bokhari. The book, which centers on the architectural elements of the Kalhora period, provided a unique opportunity to utilize her extensive knowledge of architectural styles and keen attention to detail. Through her comprehensive review, Ms. Erum was able to identify and analyze the various architectural features and styles that were prevalent during the Kalhora period, providing valuable insights that have contributed significantly to the project overarching goal of preserving and promoting Sindh’s rich architectural heritage.
  10. Translation Sindhi-To-English
    RO Erum Chang was instructed by Secretary EFT to translate Taj Sehrai’s article titled Sehwan and its Kot and Port from Sindhi to English. The article offers a comprehensive account of Alexander the Great presence in Sindh and includes diverse scholarly perspectives on the history of Sehwan. With meticulous attention to detail and expertise in translation, RO Chang completed the task and submitted the translated version to the department in accordance with the given instructions. The translated article serves as a valuable resource for those interested in exploring the rich history and cultural heritage of Sindh.
