At the book launch of “I Saw Myself: Journey with Shah Abdul Bhitai,” Dr. Sahar Gul led a talk and interviewed Shabnam Virmani about the book. The book explores the contemporary relevance of epic love legends from the region, including Sohini-Mehar and Sasui-Punhu, as brought to life through the verses of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, a powerful eighteenth-century Sufi poet. Alongside retelling these epics, the book delves into other tales and historical events that shaped the field of experience from which Shah Latif’s poetry emerged. “I Saw Myself” presents a selection of his finest poems, casting a spell of story, song, metaphor, and meaning that provides readers with subtle, startling, and even radical insights while also offering solace.
