In the chronological start of Makli i.e the Samma cluster lies a stone structure in ruins. The structure is said to be one of the first structures of Makli and named after a spiritual leader of the time, Shaikh Hamad Jamali.
The monument, located adjacent to the historic Jamia Masjid, is a sandstone ensemble. It boasts intricate craftsmanship; attention-to-detail; and beautiful motifs. The monument is square in shape; its exterior measurements are 24’-01” x 24’-01”and interior 19’-6”x19’-6”; and the wall thickness is 1’-9”. The total covered area of the structure is 579.84 sqft.
This historical stone monument is a load-bearing, post and lintel structure, constructed using sand stone members. The sub-structure is constructed using fine dressed stone blocks and the super structure is constructed of the same sandstone blocks and ornamental antique stone perforated jali. The Khanqah architecture is of the Chokundi style stone canopy with well-dressed stone columns and beams. The structural elements are stabilized using interlocking and grooving of the columns and beams. Symmetrical ornamental carving and calligraphy is etched on the columns and beams with exquisite craftsmanship. All vertical stone posts/columns are aligned by providing ring beam made up of carved stone heavy blocks. The Khanqah was covered with a dome was collapsed. The eastern façade has a rectangular shape doorframe; with perforated stone jali on both sides of monument. The flooring is made of stone block tiles which are in a dilapidated condition. The dome along with more than half of the structural members have collapsed.
The monument is in ruin with most of its structural members dislodged and damaged. The monument needed preservation and restoration. EFT started restoration work in the end of April 2022 and is to be completed by June 2023.
